The Santa Hat

Family Tree
Ada and Hayden had a happy marriage until a tragedy tore them apart just days before Christmas. A year later, just as they are about to make their split final and go their separate ways, a mysterious phone call stops them in their tracks and offers them a newfound hope.
Better than Diamonds
Fourteen-year-old Ruby is having a hard time finding the joy in the Christmas season now that her beloved grandmother is no longer with them. When her school break comes, her mother suggests she spend some time trying to solve the mystery of where her cat recently began disappearing to each and every day. Ruby begins an investigation. But she never expected the answer to mend her broken heart.

My Review

This book is different to all Rebecca's other books, The Santa hat is a collection of short stories all based around Christmas time. Not normally the sort of thing I would read, just because I find they are too short! I often struggle because as they get going, establish the character, reel me in and bam its all over and I often feel short changed, like I need to know more about the situation or characters or worse, I don’t feel the character has even been established properly. When Rebecca reached out to me, I was initially so excited to get my hands on her newbie book, I jumped at the chance, why wouldn’t I… its Rebecca L Marsh’s new book, I love her writing, get sucked into her stories and can’t put her books down, then, after I clicked send on the email a little fear started to creep in. All that was running through my mind was, its short stories, I try to avoid these normally, what if I don’t like it!
The summer holidays were passing by quickly, September was looming, the kids would return to school and the chaos it brings would rapidly take over, Rebecca’s blog tour would soon come round and I had not started reading. I picked up the book with trepidation and thought it’s now or never.
Once I had taken the plunge, this book was so easy to read and I did not want to put it down. Being short stories made it a whole lot easier to read snippets here and there and not feel like I had to finish a chapter before putting it aside to resume life. (perfect for busy mum life) It’s a wonderful collection of stories, all based on ordinary people’s lives, struggling with what life has thrown at them, at what we all perceive should be a happy time of year. They all find light at the end of the tunnel in different ways, through the power of healing, whether that was through family, friends or just learning to trust again. The emotions of the characters shone through, reeling you in making you feel a part of their lives. My concerns over character establishment or feeling short changed soon drifted away and I was left with a beautifully written, captivating short story collection. A thoroughly enjoyable read.

Thank you, Rebecca for offering me the opportunity to be a part of your blog tour and sharing with me your fantastic book.
As always, I look forward to your next book.
