Synopsis

Haunted by the memory of a devastating accident that claimed the lives of her husband and oldest daughter, Marissa's life is struck by another tragedy. Her thirteen-year-old daughter, Maisy, suffers a perilous fall under mysterious circumstances. Marissa finds herself desperately hoping her deepest fear—the loss of another child—will not be realized.

While Marissa paces the emergency room, her brother Owen searches their town on Princess Island for his son, Charlie, who hasn’t come home from school. Hours later, Charlie shows up unwilling to explain where he’s been. When he skips school a few days later, and is spotted in town with a strange woman, Owen comes face to face with his own greatest fear—the return of Charlie’s mother.

As Marissa and Owen confront their worst fears and navigate the treacherous waters of the unknown, they realize that while the path forward might be fraught with pain, the potential for healing is immense.

My Review

Having read a couple of Rebecca’s books now, when she offered me the chance to read and review Beyond the Broken Shore, I was a little excited to say the least. With my TBR pile screaming at me from the side, I guiltily started reading, my guilt for all those unread books soon disappeared as I was fully emersed, struggling to put this book down and found myself finding time to go back to it throughout the day, even if it was to get just another couple of pages read.

From the moment I started reading I was swept back into Island life, into the close family unit and made to feel at home once more. The whole story-line flowed at a nice steady pace, it was wonderfully written, and kept me wanting more.

Having met these characters in previous books I wondered if Rebecca could maintain their backstories and keep them all as I remembered, well, she portrayed them all perfectly. The story had the characters facing fears, giving second chances, struggling with guilt and finding the power of forgiveness. It also sympathetically touched on the difficult subject of addiction. Throughout the book you were constantly drawn into these emotions, which left you praying for the family.

Would I read this as a stand-alone book? No don’t do it…

You could and it would work really well as a stand-alone book but if you read the other books in the series first, you would have a far better understanding and love for each of the characters and life on the island, this would then give you a more enjoyable read. Let’s face it when we know a book is part of a series, we all like to the idea of starting at the beginning and working our way through, and this princess island series is certainly well worth a read.
